Slideshows can be created in different methodologies in Drupal.  One of them is using the FlexSlider module, which works with Views to produce slideshows.

FlexSlider is simple to use, comes with examples, and relatively easy to setup.  Here a number of examples are listed, including:

• 6 sample slideshows from the module
• 3 custom slideshows with demonstration of super-imposing text and buttons on top of the banner image

In fact, slideshows do not necessary be the sliding banner, it can also be a sliding side-block too, with smaller images on the side.  It is an alternative for advertising, or for some activities to draw audiences' attention.
